How Would You Build Your Slate?
Many affordable EV startups have come and gone over the years, and the Jeff Bezos-backed Slate is the latest of such brands looking to break into the industry. On paper, at least, it shapes up to be a compelling value proposition, as it claims to be priced at less than $20,000 after federal incentives, it offers hundreds of customization options, and you get your pick of multiple pickup and SUV body styles. Of course, we'll only really know once they're out and about driving on our roads, but the online configurator makes for lots of fun in the meantime. Would you put a deposit down on a Slate? How would you build yours? Truck or closed-top? SUV or fastback?
What Car Makes No Sense To Own But You Still Want It?
My current daily driver is a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG, and it's great. However, there's nothing like owning an out-of-warranty AMG. Every time I go into the shop, it's another $3,000 to $6,000, so I've been thinking about getting something else. Everything I want doesn't really make sense for a daily driver, though. I would love an old Honda CR-X just for fun. My dream car would be a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II, but these just keep going up in price. I've also found some early '90s Mercedes that would be fun to drive, like an '87 420 SEL that's for sale nearby. My issue is that I drive across the state frequently for work, and my car is usually the one I use for road trips. Does that stop me from wanting a CR-X? Absolutely not. I'd also pick up a Miata just for funsies. So, what car would you buy for fun if nothing else mattered? Real life responsibilities, insurance rates, and storage aside, what would you buy?
What High-Maintenance Cars Are Worth The Hassle?
Even when there are things that we don't like about our cars, most of us are willing to put up with a few minor inconveniences if the overall driving experience is a net positive. However, some owners are so committed to their rides that they'll endure unexpected breakdowns, significant time in the shop, and ludicrous maintenance expenses for a few extra miles behind the wheel. Of course, with some repeat offenders — like British or Italian classics — owners know to expect this, and yet they still gladly assume responsibility. In your opinion, what high-maintenance cars are worth the hassle? Have you ever owned a problematic vehicle that won you over with its charm?
